01 / THE PROJECT

East Centre re-establishes a landscape for learning at Prudhoe’s historic school, adult learning centre and youth centre. A series of connected spaces offers choice rather than prescription, supporting different needs, paces and ways of engaging.

Pioneer

The East Centre has a long association with learning, care and community use. Early design questioned the idea of a single enclosed garden, instead proposing connected places for movement, gathering and informal occupation.

Root

Level changes, planting and material variation create distinct settings for activity, retreat and shared use. Research into neurodiversity informs seating, thresholds and spatial arrangements, with clear routes connecting quieter and more active areas.

Adapt

Existing features are retained and reworked to embed memory and continuity. Robust, warm materials and open boundaries support changing patterns of use while maintaining a connection with the surrounding neighbourhood.

02 / DESIGN EXPLORATION

East Centre oblique landscape drawing and two inclusive seating studies, with and without people.

Seating that offers choice: different heights, armrests and space to share.

LET’S MAKE ROOM FOR SOMETHING GOOD.
