PUBLIC REALM / TOWN CENTRE

Manor Walks, Cramlington

A new civic square and welcoming gateway for Cramlington, bringing planting, seating and a flexible events space to Manor Walks.

Proposed civic square at Manor Walks, Cramlington.

01 / THE PROJECT

Hyem’s work at Manor Walks transforms a fragmented, car-dominated threshold into a legible and flexible civic landscape. Positioned between retail, leisure and residential uses, the project creates a welcoming gateway that supports movement, gathering and identity within Cramlington town centre.

Pioneer

The project reframes the western entrance as a civic square and gateway, improving connectivity between the shopping centre, leisure facilities and surrounding neighbourhoods. Responding to existing desire lines and redefining thresholds creates a safe, permeable environment that encourages movement, dwell and interaction.

Root

The “strata” concept draws on Cramlington’s coal seams and historic landscapes, transitioning from organic to formal across the site. A flexible events space of approximately 680 square metres is framed by bespoke planters and integrated seating. Rain gardens and planting soften the urban setting and introduce biodiversity.

Adapt

A robust, flexible framework accommodates changing uses and seasonal programming, including markets, performances, cinema and ice-rink events. Generous circulation, removable elements and adaptable layouts allow the square to evolve without losing coherence. Planting and water management support biodiversity, climate resilience and long-term stewardship.
